FFA Ag. Tour Day
On July 23rd, 2008 FFA members were anxiously waiting to start their journey to Bluebird Nursery in Clarkson, Cargill Meat Solutions in Schuyler, and Behlen’s Manufacturing in Columbus.

Our first stop was Bluebird Nursery where Tom Hamernick educated us on how to propagate and take care of plants, as well as explain to us how his business is run.  Mr. Hamernik also told us the business skills needed to run a business.

Next we traveled to Schuyler for a tour of Cargill Meat Solutions, which was an exciting experience.  First we toured the fabrication floor where they cut and process the meat then hiked our way to the slaughter floor where the employees slaughtered the beef animal to be processed.

Our final destination led us to Behlen’s manufacturing out of Columbus.  As we toured the factory we observed the different products that Behlen’s manufactures.

Seeing how all the products were made gave us an educated understanding of what Behlen’s does.  FFA members gained an understanding of agriculture industry opportunities in surrounding communities.

Humphrey FFA Trash Pickup

On June 26th 2008 the Humphrey FFA chapter got together for a quick meeting then set out to pick up trash on a two mile section on Highway 91 between Humphrey and Lindsay.  FFA members met in the ag room and got assigned different miles of the highway 91 to pickup.

We then picked up two miles on both sides of the highway for an approximate 20 bags of trash.  Afterwards prizes were given for the biggest, most interesting, and for the most disgusting objects.  As soon as this was done the FFA members settled down for snacks provided by Mrs. Graham and spent time socializing.

All in all, it was a great experience and allowed us to give back to our community.

On Friday, October 3rd, the Humphrey FFA Chapter teamed up with Central Valley Ag to provide a free meal for farmers for the first ever Feed A Farmer Friday.  Over 60 farmers and CVA employees were fed as part of a Feed A Farmer.... Feed the World project.  The next Feed A Farmer Friday will be on Friday, October 17th, 2008.  The Humphrey FFA Chapter and Central Valley Ag would like to wish all local farmers a Safe and Productive Harvest!

Humphrey FFA holds Farm & Home Safety Day
On Thursday October 9, the Humphrey FFA held their annual Farm & Home Safety Day.  The Chapter hosted Farm and Home Safety day for the fourth and fifth graders of Lindsay Holy Family, Humphrey St. Francis, and Humphrey Public Schools.  Approximately ninety students attended the presentations.

The students attended sessions about Internet Safety conducted by Officer Jodi Hefti, Tractor Safety taught by Brian Hula, Vacin’s employee and ATV Safety taught by Jim Mueller of the Platte County Extension Office.

Animal Safety was presented by FFA members Zach Brandl, Zeb Braun, Merisa Hastreiter and Mikalah Preister and Sun Safety was presented by FFA members Lacey Brandt, Molly Brandt, Kelei Preister and Emily Schrant.

A total of 20 FFA members helped as group leaders, presenters, and assistants.  Farm & Home Safety Day had a new addition this year, a Safety Poster Contest in which students will be able to submit a poster depicting one safety rule they learned.
