LINCOLN -- The USDA Monday slightly reduced its forecast for this year's nationwide corn and soybean harvest, although the federal agency continues to predict the second highest corn harvest on record and fourth largest soy bean harvest.
Nationally, 12 billion bushels of corn are expected to be harvested, or 8 percent less than last year. For soy beans, 2.94 billion bushels are expected to be harvested, a 10 percent increase from 2007.
The USDA said corn harvest remained behind schedule because the crop was slow to mature after a cool, wet spring.
However, the projected harvest of corn in Iowa and Nebraska remained unchanged from the USDA's October projection, with Iowa projected to harvest 2.15 billion bushels of corn and Nebraska projected to harvest 1.38 billion.
Iowa's projected harvest of soybeans remains the same as last month, at 442 million bushels although Nebraska's projected harvest was revised downward 2 percent, to 223 million bushels.
